There are many different types of wood floors, how do you know which is right for you?
Here is the low-down on the most common types of wood flooring available:
Solid/ Site Finished:
- Raw wood is sanded, stained (if required) and finished at the job site after it has been installed.
- Will be flat and smooth (no beveled edges) like those you generally encounter with a prefinished floor.
- Unlimited stain color options.
- Can be screen coated or refinished to bring it back to looking new again.
- Can be installed above grade only!
- Plan on several days for installation, sand and finish.
- There will be sanding dust and urethane odors.
- Nail down installation only.
Solid/ Pre-Finished:
- Factory finished wood is ready to install, out of the box with no sanding or finishing required.
- Most likely it will have beveled edges, not smooth and flat like the site-finished.
- Can be screen coated or refinished to bring it back to looking new again.
- Can be installed above grade only!
- Installation takes less time due to no sanding or finishing.
- Nail down installation only.
Engineered:
- These floors are made up of a core of hardwood layers with a solid hardwood veneer finish.
- Designed to provide greater dimensional stability, particularly where moisture or heat pose problems for solid floors.
- Most likely it will have beveled edges.
- Typically comes pre-finished.
- Can be screen coated or refinished to bring it back to looking new again as per manufacturers specifications.
- Can be installed on all grades.
- Can be nailed, glued, or floated depending on the manufacturers/ product specifications.
